It's always been difficult to settle on a title for this drawing. I drew it with a line of poetry swimming round my head: 'The dragon-green, the luminous, the dark, the serpent-haunted sea' (from 'The Gates of Damascus' by James Elroy Flecker). I never read the entire poem till after I drew the picture. The line is quoted by the fabulous Saki in his short story 'A Defensive Diamond', which is where I came across it.
Anyway I love thinking about the sea and the extraordinary things that
might live in it. One of the most thrilling things about it is how
little we have explored - apparently we know more about the surface of
Mars than the deep sea bed.
